Course Description

Sustainable development is defined, as promoting economic growth that will benefit present and future generations without detrimentally affecting resources or biological systems. The concepts learned in this course are applicable to businesses, industries, communities, and individuals that are interested in utilizing sustainable practices to ensure adequate resources for future generations. Implementing sustainable development principles has also been shown to create more livable communities, healthier buildings, and also providing competitive advantage to businesses and industry that implement sustainable practices. The course will investigate the problems with the present system of development and production and evaluate the required steps to achieve sustainability. Methods of achieving sustainable development such as green design, biomimicry, improving resource productivity, life cycle analysis, low impact development, de-materialization, and waste minimization/elimination will be explored. The course will also investigate the challenges of developing sustainable technology needed to eliminate waste and emissions, close the loop (recycle), utilize renewable energy sources and minimize transportation problems.

This course introduces concepts and terminology to prepare you to actively participate in the classroom exercises and begin the process of implementing SPD into your company.
